Paul's making a list and checking it twice for next year

Dear AAJA photojournalists,

AAJA photo conventioneers had a great convention in Boston. About 45 photojournalists attended the-four day event/party. Not bad for a convention with only 650 total attendees.

-Two-day hands-on workshop on multimedia (one day hands-on multimedia shooting & one day hands-on FCP) – August 4 and 5
-Multimedia & Photography ShootOut with theme: HollyWierd” – August 4 to 6

AAJA Photojournalists: Prints Needed For Sacramento Scholarship Fund Raiser

Here’s an update for donating your 11 x 14 prints for scholarships for the Sacramento Chapter’s Photo Showcase fund raising efforts.

The new address to send in your autographed prints is:

Florence Low
1138 Greene Terrace
Davis, CA. 95618

We would be greatly appreciative if you could donate 1-2 prints sized either 8 x 12 or 11 x 14 with FULL BLEED and NO white borders, to be displayed and auctioned. Sign the print with metallic silver or black sharpie in lower right hand corner at least 1/4″ above bottom right side. The mat will cover some of the image after final framing. Selected prints will be matted in a 16 x 20 frame. Framed pictures of any size are also welcome.

DEADLINE: Monday, August 31

The AAJA Sacramento chapter is having a Photo Showcase & Silent Auction fundraiser event on Tuesday, September 29 to help raise money for student scholarships and chapter programs.

When selecting a print, please consider a photo that appeals to a wide audience. Pictures of celebrities, professional athletes, animals, striking landscapes, and feature photos sell well.

Include caption information, as well as of when and where you took the photo on a separate paper. Enclose your name, affiliation, address, phone number and email address.

Prints are sold for personal use only. No reproduction rights are granted or should be assumed. However, we may post thumbnails of selected prints online and in the event brochure, so please let us know if you have any objections.
If you Priority Mail them in a 3″ diameter tube no longer than 18″ long, it will costs $5 and is the safest method. Longer tubes and cardboard envelopes typically get bent or damaged in the mail.

Thanks for your continuous help and support of AAJA Sacramento.

Sincerely,
Florence Low

Corky Lee wins national AAJA award

Corky Lee, a prolific photojournalist based in New York City is the recipient of Asian American Journalist Association (AAJA)’s Dr. Suzanne Ahn Award for Civil Rights and Social Justice for Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The award is named in honor of the late Dr. Ahn, a Korean American who was raised in Arkansas and Texas who devoted her life to promoting civil rights and social justice for all Americans, especially women and Asian Americans.

For over 35 years, Corky Lee has used his camera to ensure that the faces of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and their experiences be included in American history. Not only has he documented the civil rights struggle, he has claimed many of these stories and retold them through a very special lens. He has said, “I’d like to think that every time I take my camera out, it’s like drawing a sword to slay indifference, injustice and discrimination, trying to get rid of stereotypes.” At once intensely personal and socially conscious, he has a style of photojournalism that crosses the divides of different Asian American and Pacific Islander nationalities. From day-in-the-life to rarely seen photographs of civil rights struggles, he is imbedded with an unyielding passion for community activism.

AAJA will present the awards at the Seaport World Trade Center, Commonwealth Complex on Saturday, August 15 during its Gala Scholarship and Awards Banquet, at the AAJA National Convention in Boston.

Live student critiques Friday (Aug 14)

If there are any professionals who want to sit in and help critique, please come and help. We start at 10:15am on Friday in Photo Room.

Professional photo critiquers are now:
Kim Chapin, Boston Globe
Kii Sato, AP Chicago (moderator)
Dai Sugano, San Jose Mercury News
Greg Yamamoto, Honolulu Advertiser
one or two more photo editors/photographers since we lost a speaker.

Students:
Diana Diroy, San Jose State
Truth Leem, University of Missour
Jessica Lum, UCLA
Daniel Sato, San Jose State
Derek Sijder, San Jose State
might be one more photo student?

Depending on what assignments the Student Newspaper Projects photographers have, we will then go in alphabetical order. I’m guessing 20-30 minutes each student.

The next panel after the student session is 1:45pm, so go as long as you want, so I’ll order lunch for all speakers.

This is not a bashing session, but a constructive session to help students find jobs and internships and help them build a better portfolio to make the next step.

Rick Rocamora has documented the lives of the Filipino veterans, still clinging to hard-won medals, military commendations and scraps of uniforms as they make their way in San Francisco’s toughest neighborhoods. Rocamora’s deep connection to the veterans allows a rare view into their difficult but always dignified lives, and creates a poignant story of pain, persistence and hope. Rocamora’s images have been part of investigative stories on the abuse of veterans in North Richmond, California, Medicare scam in San Francisco that used them, exhibitions in the US Congress and other venues and countless presentations and photo essays about their plight. His images have been part of their struggle and have been credited in inspiring others to advocate for equity for the veterans.
