When selecting your donation print, consider what someone would purchase. In other words, spot news doesn’t sell well – sports stars, celebrities, Obama, food, scenics and great feature photos sell well. People who buy these photos want to hang the purchased photo on their wall.

Mailing Print:
-Your 11×14 print will be framed in a glass frame.
-Autograph your print on the lower right under the photo in white border area. Prints without autographs do NOT sell well.
-Include basic caption information of when and where you took the photo and description of photo on separate paper.
-Enclose your name, affiliation, address, phone number and email address.

East West Clicks fundraisers invites students and calls for prints

Dear AAJA student photographers,

Any Asian American photojournalism student interested in attending for “free” either the San Francisco AAJA’s East West Clicks on Saturday, Sept. 18 or the Sacramento AAJA’s PhotoShowcase on Monday, Oct. 4, please contact me.

These two photography fund-raising events are all about helping out Asian American student photojournalists. Both chapters hope to raise over $10,000 in scholarships.

2010 Dith Pran Photography and Multimedia ShootOut Winners

Karen Zhou, freelance, wins a Olympus recorder and ThinkTankPhoto bag and perpetual trophy.

List of winners in the Annual Dith Pran Photography and Multimedia ShootOut Competition. The theme of this year’s live photography competition was “HollyWierd”. About $2,000 in prizes were awarded. The competition is in honor of New York Times photographer Dith Pran, who survived the Cambodian “Killing Fields”. The perpetual trophy and cash award was given out during the Gala Banquet on Saturday night.

Reuters photographer Hyungwon Kang will be part of a panel discussion at the AAJA Town Hall Meeting about revisiting the Los Angeles riots 18 years later. Kang was working for the Los Angeles Times, who won a team Pulitzer-Prize for their efforts.

JAPANESE AMERICAN NATIONAL MUSEUM WITH STAN HONDA

Agence France Presse photojournalist Stan Honda will lead a photographic tour of his project, “Moving Walls,” of the Heart Mountain (Wyoming) internment camp. Honda will also talk and show pictures in a program at the museum about the 1994 recovery of barracks near the site of the camp where Japanese Americans were interned during World War II. He will speak about his documentation of the project and his perspective as a Sansei whose parents were interned in Arizona. Museum volunteers, several who were also interned during the war, will also speak about their experience in Wyoming and the reconstruction of the barracks.

Every year about $5,000 to $8,000 is raised every year from these Silent Photo Auctions that go directly into the pockets of future student photojournalists.

Printing & Mailing Instruction:
1. Actual image size must be exactly 10.5 x 13.5 inches. Anything larger than this dimension will need to be cut to fit the frame size. Selected prints will be matted in 16” x 20” frame.
2. Please sign your autograph on the lower right corner of image with a silver metallic pen in dark areas and a black pen in lighter areas.
3. Include basic caption information of when and where you took the photo and description of photo on separate paper.
4. Enclose your name, affiliation, address, phone number and email address.
5. Do not send CD or email photo.
6. When mailing and packaging, corrugated cardboards are suggested to keep print(s) from bending. Large mailing tube don’t seem to work that well. Smaller mailing tubes work out best.

AAJA convention photo schedule and advanced registration deadline

Dear AAJA photojournalists,

The next deadline for advanced registration for the AAJA national convention is Friday, June 18. After that date the registration will go up $75 for professionals and $50 for students.

Here’s the tentative schedule for photojournalists at the convention:
