Print (IMAGE) must be exactly 10.5 x 13.5 inches. Anything larger than this dimension will need to be cut to fit the frame size. Selected prints will be matted in 16” x 20” frame.

DEADLINE: Need in hand by July 11.

Need one or two 11″ x 14″ prints.

Mailing & Print Instructions:
1. Print (IMAGE) must be exactly 10.5 x 13.5 inches. Anything larger than this dimension will need to be cut to fit the frame size. Selected prints will be matted in 16” x 20” frame.
2. Please sign your autograph on the lower right corner of image with a silver metallic pen in dark areas and a black pen in lighter areas. The signature should be 1/2 inch above bottom of print and 1/2″ from right side of the print.
3. Include basic caption information of when and where you took the photo and description of photo on separate paper.
4. Enclose your name, affiliation, address, phone number and email address.
5. Do not send CD or email photo.
6. When mailing and packaging, corrugated card boards are suggested to keep print(s) from bending. Last year some photographers mailed in tubes available at the post office, additional packing materials are available.

Kitagaki exhibit to open at BART station Saturday (April 28)

You are invited to an opening of photographs by Sacramento Bee photographer Paul Kitagaki Jr., and documentary photographer Dorothea Lange at the San Bruno Bay Area Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) station on Saturday, April 28. 2012.

The BART station was the location of the former Tanforan Race Track and also the Tanforan Assembly Center during WWII where Japanese Americans were herded up in 1942 before their were sent to permanent internment camps.

AAJA photographers,

Kitagaki’s father, aunt and grandparents were taken to this relocation center before they were taken to the Topaz Internment Camp in Utah. They were also photographed by the famous documentary photographer Dorothea Lange, from the National Archives.

The photography exhibit is entitled “They wore their best … The Japanese-American Evacuation and After”.

BART is hosting a reception to recognize the historic event that occurred at this BART station site at the photographic exhibit to kick off the Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month in May.

Unity Student Projects Applications

AAJA offers photo students an opportunity to work in a convergence newsroom through the student convention project at the 2012 Unity Convention. This program will provide “mojo” (mobile journalism) and other news training opportunities to college students and professionals.

Professionals, if you know of a photo student interested in this, please pass this on.

Deadline: Friday, March 9.

From the applications, eight of the most promising students will be selected as finalists and given the opportunity for building skills and developing their portfolios. They will be given pre-convention assignments covering issues related to the journalism industry today and/or the Asian American/Pacific Islander community.

The Unity Student Projects team will cover the latest news about journalists, the state and future of the industry, and how the newsroom changes affect the community. Their works will be featured and updated around the clock on the convention website and in a magazine-style publication to be distributed to convention attendees on the final day of convention.

Photo student scholarship deadline is fast approaching!

This year, AAJA SF is awarding up to $8,000 in scholarships to talented student journalists. You don’t have to be a journalism or mass communications major to apply, but you must be able to demonstrate a strong intent to pursue journalism. Students are generally selected for Bay Area scholarships based on their commitment to journalism, journalistic ability, sensitivity to Asian Pacific American issues as demonstrated by community involvement, financial need and scholastic achievement.
